Valrhona has a strong history with Venezuela. It began in the 1990s with a commitment to rehabilitate Venezuela's old cocoa varieties, such as Porcelana, to ensure their preservation. We selected the Sur del Lago region of Venezuela, known for the richness of its terroir, which gives Araguani all its aromatic complexity. The name Araguani refers to the “Araguaney,” an iconic tree in Venezuela, as well as to “Guarani,” the name of a native Venezuelan people. Today, we remain strongly committed to working with our Venezuelan partner to ensure the preservation of the genetic diversity of the cocoa varieties in this region, which give Araguani its unique character.
A Valrhona partner since 2016, Cacao San José is a family business that has been producing high-quality cocoa since 1830 in the crop’s ancestral home, Venezuela. It grows Criollo, a cocoa with a fine, woody aroma which is also a symbol of resilience and national pride. It is committed to social well-being and sustainability, which is why 100% of its plots have been geolocated since 2022.
